The institution
About the Institution of Civil Engineers
ICE is an independent professional association and learned society for civil engineers, and a charitable body in the United Kingdom. UN75 was produced as an official publication for the institution.
A professional home for civil engineers
Based in London, ICE supports the civil engineering profession through professional qualification, education, professional ethics, standards and engagement with industry, academia and government. It is one of the oldest engineering institutions in the world and was founded in 1818 by a group of young engineers.
The institution has more than 92,000 members. Three quarters of them are based in the United Kingdom, while the rest work in more than 150 other countries. That international membership is reflected in the reach of UN75 and in the global framework of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The UN75 publication
UN75: Sustainable Engineering in Action was produced for ICE and published in November 2020. The book explores ICE and the UN’s shared commitment to shaping a better future, informed by the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN agencies involved in implementing them.
Contributions from a host of UN agencies, as well as organisations such as WaterAid and Oxford University, highlight engineering’s impact in health and sanitation, human rights, the climate, urban growth, economic development and agriculture.
“The challenges are informed by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the UN agencies involved in implementing them, and the ways in which engineering can provide rigorous, long term solutions.”
Why the goals matter to engineering
The 17 goals set out a shared agenda for people and the planet. For civil engineers, they connect daily work on water, energy, transport, buildings and public space to outcomes that reach far beyond a single project.
UN75 shows how that connection works in practice. It follows the goals through the agencies that deliver them and through the engineering expertise that turns policy into infrastructure, services and lasting improvements in people’s lives.
Read the publication. The hardback edition is available at the special offer price of £29.95, including postage and packaging in the UK. You can also explore the goals or read more about the publisher.
